Act 1

To BE HUMAN

The Human Heart

From ONCE ON THIS ISLAND

Arr. Andy Beck

Performed by Holland Stull, Kinsley Wardle, Remi Stull, Megan Belisle, Grace Rogers, Ella Hessing; directed by Brandi Cook

From the Broadway musical ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, we take The Human Heart as our theme for the Season 12 Finale Concert. Ti Moun has endured much struggle and hardship. Erzulie, the Caribbean goddess of love reminds Ti Moun that she is connected to the great human family, and that tonight, that she, and all of us, are a part of the human heart.

The courage of a dreamer,
The innocence of youth.
The failures and the foolishness
That lead us to the truth
.

The hopes that make us happy,
The hopes that don’t come true.
And all the love there ever was:
I see this all in you
.

You are part,
Part of the human heart.
Part of the human heart.
You are part
.

You are part.
Of all who took the journey
And managed to endure,
The ones who knew such tenderness,
The ones who felt so sure
.

The ones who
Came before you,
The others yet to come
.

And those who you will teach it to,
And those you learned it from
.

You are part,
Part of the human heart.
You are part–

This is the gift I give
Through your love
You’ll live forever …

Forever…
You are part
.

Tonight,
Tonight,
Part of the human heart
.

Welcome

TO TAKE RISKS

Touch the Sky

From BRAVE

Arr. Mac Huff

Featuring Talli Craig, fiddle; Tyler Craig, guitar; Maycee Post, Katie Green

Performed by Chorale and Concert Choir, directed by Krista Carroll

Merida is the impetuous daughter of Scottish King Fergus and Queen Elinor. She’s a skilled archer who wants to carve out her own path in life. Her defiance of an age-old tradition leads to chaos in the kingdom. In Touch the Sky, Merida leaves the castle and rides her horse through the forest, shooting arrows, climbing cliffs, and then returning home.

When cold wind is a’ calling
And the sky is clear and bright,
Misty mountains sing and beckon,

Lead me out into the light.

I will ride, I will fly,
Chase the wind and touch the sky.
I will fly, chase the wind and touch the sky
.

Where dark woods hide secrets
And mountains are fierce and bold,
Deep waters hold reflections
Of times lost long ago
.

I will hear their every story,
Take hold of my own dream.
Be as strong as the seas are stormy,

And proud as an eagle’s scream.

I will ride, I will fly,
Chase the wind and touch the sky.
I will fly, chase the wind and touch the sky
.

TO BELIEVE

My Own Superhero

Shawna Edwards

Featuring Isabelle Jimenez, Bethany Jimenez, Brittin Thomas, Isla Stewart, Evie Openshaw, Reagan Stott, Annie Walker

Performed by Chorale and Concert Choir, directed by Krista Carroll

When I feel alone or afraid,
And nothing is goin’ my way,
Or when I’m just running a little low on faith …
That’s when I just gotta believe
There’s power and courage in me.
And whatever happens,
Thru good days and bad ones,
I will stand and say
:

I can climb this mountain.
I can brave this storm.
I can be amazing.
There’s no telling now how far I’ll go, oh.
When the day needs saving
It starts with me, I know, so
I will move, I will rise,
I will choose, I will try
To be my own superhero.

I’ll be a light in the dark.
I’ll do the right thing when it’s hard.
I’ll reach out my hand if we start to drift apart.
When you need my help, I’ll be there.
Cuz real superpowers are meant to be shared.
We’re brighter together.
And stronger than ever.
Hand in hand and heart to heart
.

I’ll never give up.
I’ll never give in.
And each time I fall
I will rise again.
When the day needs saving
It starts with me, I know, so
I will move, I will rise,
I will choose, I will try
To be my own superhero.

What Is This Feeling?

From WICKED

Arr. Roger Emerson

Olivia Walker, Galinda; Natalie Walker, Elphaba; Ensemble: Ethan Carroll, Megan Christensen, Davis Cook, Daxton Cook, Joseph Gardiner, Maren Gardiner, Tyler Guptill, Camrey Hebdon, Jara Kirkham, Brig Mason, Katie McCauley, Abbie Turgoose, Amelia Walker; directed by Cara Stewart

Prior to being known as the Good Witch of the North and the Wicked Witch of the West, Galinda and Elphaba write home to their respective parents about their new rooming situation at Shiz University.

What is this feeling, so sudden and new?
I felt the moment I laid eyes on you.
My pulse is rushing.
My head is reeling.
My face is flushing.
What is this feeling,
Fervid as a flame?
Does it have a name?
Yes!

Loathing! Unadulterated loathing
For your face, your voice, your clothing.
Let’s just say
I loathe it all!
Every little trait, however small,
Makes my very flesh begin to crawl
With simple utter loathing!

There’s a strange exhilaration
In such total detestation.
It’s so pure, so strong!
Though I do admit it came on fast,
Still, I do believe that it can last.

And I will be loathing,
loathing you my whole life long!

TO WANT

If I Only Had a Brain

From THE WIZARD OF OZ

Arr. Sally Albrecht

Ainsley Mahan, Dorothy; Abigail Cox, Scarecrow; Grant Gardiner, Cowardly Lion; Luke Walker, Tin Man; Rebekah Allen, Sarah Baird, Lydia Bodily, Kelsey Cole, Bethany Jimenez, Maylee Peterson, Maycee Post, Oaklie Ogle, Scarlett Tietz, stagehands; directed by Krista Carroll

Dorothy Gale, The Scarecrow, The Tin Man, The Cowardly Lion costumes courtesy of Treasure Valley Children’s Theater.

Many years after Galinda and Elphaba’s years at Shiz, Galinda (now known as Glinda) has sent young Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto on a quest to the Emerald City. Along her way, she befriends a scarecrow yearning for a brain, a wood cutter made of tin who wants a heart, and a lion who covets courage.

I could while away the hours
Conferrin’ with the flowers,
Consulting with the rain;

And my head I’d be a scratchin’
While my thoughts are busy hatchin’
If I only had a brain.

I’d unravel ev’ry riddle
For any “individdle”
In trouble or in pain
.

With the thoughts I’d be thinkin’
I could be another Lincoln
If I only had a brain.

Oh, I, could tell you why
The ocean’s near the shore.
I could think of things I’d never thunk before,
And then I’d sit and think some more.

I would not be just a nuffin’,
My head all full of stuffin’,
My heart all full of pain;

And perhaps I’d deserve you and be
Even worthy ‘erv you
If I only had a brain.

TO GRIEVE

Death Shall Not Destroy My Comfort

Arr. Mack Wilberg

Performed by Virtuoso and Concordia, directed by Erika McCauley

Death shall not destroy my comfort,
Christ shall guide me through the gloom;
Down He’ll send some heav’nly convoy,
To escort my spirit home.

Oh, hallelujah! How I love my Savior!
Oh, hallelujah! That I do;
Oh, hallelujah! How I love my Savior!
Mourners, you may love Him too.

Jordan’s stream shall not o’er flow me,
While my Savior’s by my side;
Canaan, Canaan lies before me!
Soon I’ll cross the swelling tide.

See the happy spirits waiting,
On the banks beyond the stream!
Sweet responses still repeating,
“Jesus! Jesus!” is their theme.

Stand Up

From HARRIET

Arr. Mac Huff

Featuring Brooklynn Thomas, Rachel Carr, Hailey Carroll, Annebel Mathews, Olivia Nielsen

Performed by Virtuoso and Concordia, directed by Brandi Cook

Stand Up is the anthem from the movie HARRIET. Based on the thrilling and inspirational life of American freedom fighter, Harriet Tubman, this song tells of her escape from slavery, and her courage and tenacity in freeing over 300 slaves from the American South as a conductor along the Underground Railroad.

I been walkin’
With my face turned to the sun.
Weight on my shoulders
A bullet in my gun.
Oh, I got eyes in the back of my head
Just in case I have to run.
I do what I can when I can while I can for my people
While the clouds roll back and the stars fill the night
.

That’s when I’m gonna stand up,
Take my people with me.
Together we are going
To a brand new home
Far across the river.
Can you hear freedom calling?
Calling me to answer.
Gonna keep on keepin’ on.
I can feel it in my bones
.

Early in the mornin’
Before the sun begins to shine,
We’re gonna start movin’
Towards that separating line.
I’m wadin’ through muddy waters.
You know I got a made up mind.
And I don’t mind if I lose any blood on the way to salvation.
And I’ll fight with the strength that I got until I die
.

So I’m gonna stand up,
Take my people with me.
Together we are going
To a brand new home
Far across the river.
Can you hear freedom calling?
Calling me to answer.
Gonna keep on keepin’ on
.

And I know what’s around the bend
Might be hard to face ’cause I’m alone.
And I just might fail,
But Lord knows I tried,
Sure as stars fill up the sky
.

Who I’d Be

From SHREK

Arr. Keith McCauley

Performed by Clayton Earl, Shrek; Ella Hessing, Fiona; Andrew Paternoster, Donkey; directed by Keith McCauley

Shrek is a big green ogre; not the kind of guy a beautiful princess would be interested in. After having been strong-armed into rescuing the Princess Fiona, he begins to entertain the idea of what life could be like … if he wasn’t an ogre. Princess Fiona, cursed to transform from human to ogre every night, sings about how she wishes a (human) charming prince would come and save her from her tower. And Donkey? He’s just desperate for a friend.

Shrek:
I guess I’d be a hero, With sword and armor clashing
Looking semi dashing, a shield within my grip.
Or else I’d be a Viking and live a life of daring
While smelling like a herring, upon a Viking ship.
I’d sail away, I’d see the world, I’d reach the farthest reaches.
I’d feel the wind, I’d taste the salt and sea.
And maybe storm some beaches.
That’s who I’d be. That’s who I’d be.

Or I could be a poet and write a different story,
One that tells of glory, and wipes away the lies
And to the skies I’d throw it, the stars would do the telling.
The moon would help with spelling, and night would dot the ‘I’s.
I’d write a verse, recite a joke, with wit and perfect timing.
I’d share my heart, confess the things I yearn, and do it all while rhyming.
But we all learn. But we all learn.

And ogre always hides, an ogre’s fate is known.
And ogre always stays in the dark and all alone
.

So yes I’d be a hero, and if my wish was granted
Life would be enchanted, or so the stories say.
Of course I’d be a hero, and I would scale a tower
And save a hot-house flower, and carry her away.
But standing guard would be a beast, I’d somehow overwhelm it.
I’d get the girl, I’d take my breath, and I’d remove my helmet.

We’d stand and stare, we’d speak of love, we’d feel the stars ascending.
We’d share a kiss, I’d find my destiny.
I’d have a hero’s ending, a perfect happy ending…
That’s how it would be.
A big bright beautiful world

But not for me.

Fiona:
An ogre always hides. An ogres fate is known.

Fiona and Shrek:
An ogre always stays in the dark.

Donkey:
You’re all alone.

Shrek:
So yes I’d be a hero, and if my wish Was granted my life would be Enchanted or so the stories say.
Of course I’d be a hero and I would Scale a tower to save a hot-house Flower and carry her away!

Fiona:
And I know he’ll appear ’cause there Are rules and there are strictures.
I believe the story books
I read by Candle light.

Donkey:
All alone.
You need a pal.
My calendar’s open.
Ya need me.

All:
A perfect happy ending.
That’s how it should be.

TO DREAM

The Impossible Dream

from MAN OF LA MANCHA

Dedicated to Ben Barrus

Arr. Keith McCauley

Featuring Allison Linton

Performed by Virtuoso and Concordia, directed by Keith McCauley

THE MAN OF LA MANCHA is a play within a play. Miguel de Cervantes, a failed playwright, and his manservant perform his uncompleted novel Don Quixote to their fellow inmates while awaiting trial by the Spanish Inquisition for an offense against the church. Don Quixote is an old, delusional, yet idealistic, man on a quest to restore chivalry, conquer evil, and right all wrongs. He battles a windmill, thinking it is a monster, and flees to shelter in a roadside inn, which he insists is a castle. As he stands vigil over his armor, the night before he is to be knighted by the innkeeper, the piteous serving wench Aldonza confronts him on his irrational ways. He answers with his credo, The Impossible Dream. Even though this song is traditionally performed by a man, its message is applicable to all. We’ve asked Mrs. Linton to sing it with us tonight.

To dream the impossible dream.
To fight the unbeatable foe.
To bear with unbearable sorrow.
To run where the brave dare not go
.

To right the unrightable wrong.
To love pure and chaste from afar.
To try when your arms are too weary,
To reach the unreachable star
.

This is my quest:
To follow that star!
No matter how hopeless,
No matter how far.
To fight for the right,
Without question or pause.
To be willing to march into Hell
for a Heavenly cause
.

And I know if I’ll only be true
To this glorious quest,
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I’m laid to my rest.

And the world will be better for this.
That one man, scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable star
!

13 minute intermission.
